The Best Rest just got Better

For those of you unfortunate enough to be acquainted with the GA Equipment Gnu, you know he very definitely plays favourites with kit.

  • Win & Win .. BIG fan.
  • Hoyt .. move along people .. nothing to see here .. move along, move along.
  • Uukha .. loving his Sigma limbs even if they are French.
  • Shibuya .. this is where things become religious.

Its well know his fav company in the archery kit market is Shibuya and their holy trinity of items. Yes, this is beginning to sound a little messianic, but if you've met him you'll know we're already well past sensible levels of devotion. But, now that we are here .. what are his Holy Trinity?

Book of Armaments Chapter One

His affection for Shibuya sights is well known. He recommends the Dual Click to all beginner recurvers buying their first bow, telling them its "robust .. precise" ...  This dude has seen John Wick 2 far too often!  However he isn't wrong. Shibuya sights are known as items built to strict quality control standards and fine tolerances. Sights you cannot go wrong with.

Book of Armaments Chapter Two

His second fav item from the Nihon (日本) Masters of Shiny is the DX button. Well priced and smooth in operation. Cheaper than this button will be a far poorer experience. More expensive, you'll be getting features like micro adjustment you might never use. The DX is a sweet sweet spot.

Book of Armaments Chapter Three

Robust

Finally, the Shibuya Ultima recurve rest is quite frankly the best there is. Over 90% of the archers at the Paris Olympics used this puppy*. Nobody turns up at an Olympic final thinking, "I'll save twenty quid and buy the slightly rubbish one." It's just perfect... or at least it was.

Was? .. Yup, there's a new best in town but as The Who sang in Won't Get Fooled Again ... "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" ..... well, almost the same. There is now an Ultima G2. .. Ooh! .. Suits you sir! .. Lets look at the changes.

Visually, there are two you will notice immediately. The rest plate .. the bit that sticks to the riser .. now has beveled edges. And while this is cosmetic only, it is pretty sexy. One of the two big changes are laser etched marks in 0.5mm increments vertically on the plate. This will allow precise up/down adjustment of the rest arm which is a nice quality of life change for those dirty rotten scoundrels who swap from carbons to big fat cheating ali's when they go inside.

Precise

The other big change came about when Shibuya looked at the original rest and apparently asked the question nobody else was asking: ‘What if... more magnet?’ The single magnet has become two, apparently giving the arm a more consistent reset after each shot.

Finally, the hex screw holding the whole thing together looks to have been upgraded which is appreciated by those who like to fiddle. Groundbreaking .. no. Upgrade .. yes and on a product no-one thought could be upgraded!

Final Thoughts

All in all, the best just got better. Not by a massive degree because the original Ultima rest was already mighty fine. But the ULTIMA Recurve Rest G2 is now our kit Gnu's fav rest ... and he hasn't even touched it ... YET!

Merlin are already getting hourly emails ...... Is it in yet?... Is it in yet? ... Is it in yet? ... Is it in yet?
